Ceramic works by Kiichi Takeuchi

I am a BFA student who focused on making ceramic works

TL;DR I've been working in Computer Science field for 25 years, and I made tons of apps. Today, I am challenging myself to be a ceramicist at Long Island University while I am exploring my style.

Present (2021-)

I have been working on ceramics since 2021. I met an instructor/ceramicist, Johnna Woods, at Long Island University Brooklyn Campus. I learned the introduction of hand building and wheel throwing from her. In early 2022, I took private classes with Min Choi at Clay Space Brooklyn where I learned intermediate level of wheel thrown. I also finished a few online courses at Udemy.com which are taught by Daytona State College faculty, Trent Berning. Since Fine Arts Department closed on Brooklyn Campus, I start taking courses at LIU Post Campus. I'm currently enrolled in BFA Fine Arts, and Frank Olt is my instructor at Craft Center. My primary studio is LIU Post Craft Center, and I keep working in the evening and on weekends.

Past (1979-2021)

After graduating from a high school in Tokyo, I decided to continue my education in the United States. I graduated from SUNY Morrisville, and then I took a few semesters at Polytechnic University. In 2001, I transfered to Long Island University where I completed my B.S and M.S in Computer Science. Around that time, I got a fulltime position at the same University, and I started teaching as an Adjunct as well. In weekend, I work with Gavi Narra in order to pursue our startup / app ideas at ObjectGraph LLC. Between 2010 and 2013, I went back to graudate school as Earth and Environmental Science major in M.S. This subject led me to teach at the first 100% online campus which was an accredited flagship post-baccalaureate course, "Mobile GIS Programming". My recent interestes and degrees are from Coursera and EdX, such as Machine Learning (e.g. John's Hopkins & Tront University) and Quantum Computing (e.g St. Petersburg University & TU Delft). In this year, I successfully mentored two internship students.

What's Next

I am actively building various notions of ceramic arts: functional wares, handbuilding objects, and 3D prints - under Frank Olt, who is a long-time faculty at Long Island University. While he has been giving me training in of ceramic studio management skills, I went through a few different firing activities. My mentors - Evan, Vince, and Jeff, I was involved in the gas firing process; the high firing and heavy reduction process opened a new direction in my works. Evan introduced me to Trevor Youngberg who built Anagama in Connecticut, and then I jump into their 2022 Summer wood firing shift right away. It was a fascinating experience in terms of both working and the results. I found that the American-style Raku firing was not just a learning experience but it is also a mind-opening approach to ceramic art. In terms of other academic acgtivities, I'm studying and researching science aspects of ceramics and the intercultural history of ceramic arts in the United States. In the meantime, I submitted a few applications for conferences and events. In closing, special thanks to my first instructor Johnna Woods who remains as my mentor, she has been reviewing my progress, critiques, and insights about ceramic culture.
